Aberthaw Award: Teamwork at its best

The first of three replacement high efficiency International class boiler feed pumps is being installed by Weir P&I Services Ltd at Aberthaw power station near Cardiff South Wales. All work installing the first unit is planned to be complete during a 48 day programme. A second pump is to be installed between June and July this year with the third unit following on in April 2008. WES are not only responsible for the pump installation but for the modifications to the pipework and civil work as well.

The existing units, supplied by The Harland Engineering Company in 1964, are being replaced, but the existing gearboxes and booster pumps will be retained for use with the new equipment.

“Being a retrofit installation rather than a green field site has called for a number of innovative modifications to the design of the pumps and associated equipment” said project manager Andy Wagstaff.  “Communications and idea exchanges between the two companies have worked well and the project should be completed on schedule”
