With the nuclear market booming, Weir Power and Industrial is in a strong position to deliver valves to the nuclear power industry. One such success story for Weir is the US facility in Ipswich, Massachusetts, which manufactures the Tricentric triple offset butterfly valve. The facility now possesses an ASME III N stamp, enabling them to produce nuclear grade products. Thanks to this certification and the hard work of the nuclear sales team, a significant nuclear valve order from Westinghouse was secured earlier this year. This order gives Weir Power and Industrial the responsibility for the installation of “N” stamped valves in the new units at Sanmen and Haiyang sites in China.

Weir Power & Industrial have secured several aftermarket orders for services, spare parts and replacement valves through its facilities in South Africa and the Middle East.
The service orders are for plant outage work at Kriel and Hendrina power stations in South Africa and Dugas in the Middle East. The significant installed base of Weir products in the emerging regions and increasing demand for power plant extensions and upgrades has driven the requirement for increased customer service support and spare parts. This has increased requirements for replacement valve products including repeat business for Maersk in conjunction with Prometal.
The Middle East operation recently secured spares contracts for the refurbishment of the Kindasa Water Services plant in Saudi Arabia. Andrew Will, Power & Industrial Emerging Markets, sales & marketing director, said “The availability of local aftermarket support for product overhauls, spares and replacement valves gives Weir Power & Industrial a real advantage in this active key region and is aligned with Weir Group being a truly global supplier.”

Petron Corporation is the largest oil refining and marketing company in the Philippines, supplying nearly 40% of the country’s oil requirements. Following catastrophic failure at a site in the Philippines, Petron requested Weir Power and Industrial’s Turbomachinery Service Centre to replicate a new compressor bundle using severely damaged parts as patterns. Weir offered an impressive delivery time to manufacture the new components and rebuild the compressor.
The compressor bundle and barrel, along with a spare rotor, were air-freighted from the Philippines to the Turbomachinery Service Centre in Barton-on-Humber in the UK. The old parts were scanned using a 3-D coordinate mapping machine and the contours of the parts were digitally adjusted to compensate for the distortion caused as a result of the explosion. New parts were then produced and the compressor was rebuilt in the UK before being returned to the Philippines.
Improvements were made to the original 1971 design, including the superior surface finish of the diaphragms. The work carried out on the Petron compressor displays the benefit of skilful engineering and the commercial impact of reduced delivery times.

Weir Valves & Controls UK Ltd has recently completed the design and manufacture of main steam isolation valves for the phase two extension of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Station in China.
With a diameter of 750mm and weighing 13.75 tonnes, the isolation valves stand five metres tall and are the largest ever designed and built by Weir Valves and Controls UK Ltd at its West Yorkshire manufacturing facility in Elland.
Having recently completed factory acceptance testing, the valves are scheduled for installation at Qinshan in May this year, with commissioning planned for May 2010.
The valves, which are the parallel slide gate design, isolate saturated steam with the sole purpose of protecting the steam generators in the unlikely event of a pipe break down stream of the valve. The Hopkinsons valve closes within five seconds should a pipe break be detected, protecting the steam generator and preventing any major safety issues.
