East meets West

It is commonly accepted that English is the world’s ‘business language’ and that there is a growing interest in the English language across China. In recognition of this the Weir Power & Industrial Emerging Markets Chinese operation has set up The English Club.

The main objective of The English Club is to improve business communication in English across the entire China team. This is being encouraged by using English in presentations, emails and meetings. In addition, there are twice weekly sessions to which everyone is welcome.

The Club has also arranged for shop floor employees, drivers and security guards to have a list of 100 commonly used sentences to help facilitate the use of English. In addition, it is planning to have English audio and video to be played during meal times.

Willard Sun, chairman of The English Club said, “There are a number of people who already speak English very well and a larger number across the operation who are keen to learn. The English Club will bring both these groups together and give everyone the opportunity to learn the English language in an enjoyable and interesting way.
